폭우로 침수된 충북 청주 오송읍의 궁평2지하차도에서 17일 새벽부터 시신 4구가 수습돼 누적 사망자가 모두 13명으로 늘어난 가운데, 미국 일간 뉴욕타임스(NYT), CNN 방송 등 주요 외신도 한국의 호우 피해에 관련해 집중 보도하며 동아시아 지역이 기후위기에 직면했다고 짚었다.

 

 

 

 

NYT "사상자 속출... 수십만 가구 전기 끊겼다"

NYT는 16일(현지시간) 충북 오송 지하차도 침수 희생자를 포함한 피해 상황을 비중 있게 다루며 한국에서 최근 며칠 사이에 전국을 휩쓴 장맛비로 피해가 속출한다고 보도했다.

NYT는 “장마철 한국을 강타한 폭우로 인해 집이 파묻히고, 나무가 쓰러지고, 기차와 항공기가 취소되고, 수십만 가구에 전기가 끊겼다”며 한국이 “휘청거리고 있다”고 보도했다.

NYT는 “한국은 여름철에 비가 자주 내리고 산악 지형이 많아 산사태에 취약하다”며 “하지만 이번엔 지금까지 보고된 사상자 수가 예년보다 많다”고 전했다.

NYT는 최근 한국의 폭우 피해가 서울이나 부산 등 대도시에 집중됐지만, 이번 폭우의 경우 충청도나 전라도 등 신속한 대처가 힘든 지방 지역에서 발생했다고 짚었다.

NYT는 지난해 8월 기록적인 폭우로 전국에서 최소 14명이 숨졌고, 2020년에는 몇 주간에 걸친 비로 전국적으로 홍수와 산사태가 발생해 48명이 사망했다는 점도 짚었다.

그러면서 한국 정부가 시민들에게 안전을 당부하며 경계를 늦추지 않는 가운데 주말 사이 사상자가 늘어나 긴장감은 더 커졌다고 덧붙였다.

Eight bodies were recovered from a flooded highway underpass in South Korea, officials reported Sunday, bringing the death toll in the recent floods to at least 37. The country has been reeling from intense rainfall from the monsoon, which has swept across the nation in recent days, burying homes, knocking down trees, canceling flights and trains, and cutting power to tens of thousands of residents.

As of Sunday evening, the flooding and landslides had also injured at least 35 people, according to a statement released by the Interior Ministry, adding that there were nine people known to be missing.

At least 15 vehicles were in the underpass in Cheongju, a city about 70 miles south of Seoul, when it flooded around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, according to the local fire department. Five people thought to have been in there remain missing; it was not clear how many people might have gotten out. Nearly 400 rescue workers had been sent to the site.

CNN 방송도 “산사태와 갑작스런 홍수를 일으킨 폭우로 한국에서 수천명의 이재민이 발생했다”며 폭우 피해 소식을 전했다.

CNN은 “과학자들은 인간이 초래한 기후 위기로 기상이변의 가능성이 커지면서 동아시아 전역에서 폭우 빈도와 강도가 증가하고 있다고 경고했다”고 보도했다.

그러면서 최근 이웃 일본에서도 엄청난 폭우가 쏟아져 25명의 사상자가 나왔고, 이달 초에는 중국 남서부에서도 폭우로 홍수가 발생해 충칭시에서 최소 15명이 사망했다고 보도했다.

Rescue workers pulled seven bodies from vehicles trapped in a flooded underpass in central South Korea, authorities said Sunday, after days of torrential rain caused landslides and flash floods that have killed at least 33 people.

A large-scale search and rescue operation involving 400 workers and divers was launched Saturday after 15 vehicles, including a public bus, became trapped by rising flood waters in the Gungpyeong tunnel, the chief of local fire department Seo Jeong-il said.

The deluge gushed through the tunnel when a levee of the nearby Miho river in North Chungcheong province failed, Seo said in a televised briefing, trapping the vehicles and those inside.

 

Dashcam footage from one vehicle that made it though the tunnel, shows water rushing into the underpass as cars drive head on into the flood waters.

The rescue operation was ongoing Sunday morning, with 10 people reported missing while authorities worked to identify the bodies, according to South Korean Ministry of the Interior and Safety.

Nine people had been rescued with injuries, Seo said.
